Why Can’t I Kick My Own Butt?

It’s Friday. I went to the gym after work…seriously, who am I?

That’s cool and all, but it was actually a total failure. There’s just something about the treadmill that totally demotivates me lately. I wanted to get in a 3 mile hill workout but ended up just doing 2.1 miles of straight UPHILL. Apparently that’s not the best way of going about hills and I had to couldn’t stop myself from throwing in the towel a mile early. Boo.

Then I moved on to a few machines with the intention of getting in some solid strength training instead. I got through chest reps and some lat exercises and then threw in the towel again. So not feeling it tonight.

As I was leaving the gym I realized something. I am completely incapable of kicking my own butt. I need a plan, a coach, a team, a class…SOMETHING to tell me what to do. That’s why BodyPump works for me. It’s an hour of planned and coached strength training with no need for me to think about what to do next. And that’s why the training team got me through two half marathons and a PR. Eureka!

I seriously can’t believe I haven’t thought about this sooner. I need to stick to classes and a solid running training plan and I’ll be A-OK.

Get Up and Go

I had a horrible night’s sleep last night.

I woke up multiple times for no apparent reason and was also so kindly visited by Aunt Flo (TMI ugg). I was SO tempted to stay in bed when 7:30am rolled around, but my dad and I had plans to hit up the gym. They offer an 8:30am BodyPump class that I really didn’t want to pass up. I SERIOUSLY considered bailing on our excursion, but it’s not like the option of a nap is entirely out of the picture on vacation…so I got my butt outta bed.

This couldn’t be any more true…

I really wish I had the willpower to work out in the mornings before work. It’s so hard to get motivated! Why can’t I just get it through my head that I will ALWAYS feel better after a workout?!

I digress. So the BodyPump class had exactly 3 students and was quite fabulous. The instructor was German and was blasting techno tracks the entire time. However, I was completely thrown off by the fact that their weights were in kilograms instead of pounds. I have no idea how much I was lifting. It’s interesting to see how another gym handles their BodyPumping.

After sufficiently burning out my muscles, I hopped on the treadmill for a brisk 4 miler. I recently discovered (thanks DailyMile) that I’m only 12 miles shy of running 500 miles for the year! So now I must accomplish that goal…4 miles today, 4 tomorrow, and 4 on NYE. It will be done. I finished today’s 4 in 35:30 – a great run for me!

I forgot to mention another of my fav Christmas presents: a new Under Armour running top. It’s heavenly. Kind of fleecy on the inside and comes complete with thumb holes. Swoon.

I look haggard, but the top is cute.

Time to tackle some wedding thank yous! Oh and happy 2 months of marriage to me and the hubster!!

Make it Work

Anyone else a huge fan of Tim Gunn? I kind of want to kidnap him and keep him as my own fabulous grandfather (not that I think he’s super old, but you know what I mean). That’s not creepy…

Today I had to make my workouts work.

On Mondays, normally I like to go to Spin at 5:30 and BodyPump at 6:30. It’s a great combination of cardio and weights. However, I had a work event scheduled for 5:30 today and I knew there was no way I’d be done in time for either.

Mondays provide the most flexibility for me since I work from home these days. It really is the best thing EVER. It’s quiet, I can make smoothies at will, brew coffee just the way I like it, work with a cat on my lap, and, most importantly, use my lunch break for a work out. Today I decided to work out longer than usual since I’d be extending my work day until about 7pm.

I hit up the 12:10 BodyPump XP class at the gym and then came home and did a quick 3 miler. I was hesitant to run in the middle of the day, but thankfully a quick rain shower washed much of the heat away. It was still about 88 when I hit the road, which is a FAR CRY from 97 and humid. Why can’t my runs be this good in the early morning?!

When all was said and done I whipped up a delicious smoothy and went back to work. Another perk of working from home…no need to shower immediately after working out.

HMT Week 1 Adjustments

I had big plans for my first week of Half Marathon Training.

Here’s what I aimed to do:

I ended up completely skipping all workouts on Monday. I totally forgot that Brian’s cousin was coming in to town for work, and we planned to have dinner with her. I usually add this kind of thing to my calendar, but it literally slipped my mind. By the time I remembered she was coming it was too late to squeeze in a workout. That put me at -1 Spin and -1 Bodypump for the week. Not such a good start.

I managed to make it to Wine and Dash on Tuesday (just barely!) but bailed on my Wednesday run. I spent the ENTIRE day driving around Richmond delivering cupcake invites for a work event and I was completely exhausted by the time I got home. And we had our final priest meeting at 6:30 so it was dark by the time I got home. I felt tired from the day’s work, so I didn’t mind taking a rest day.

Thursday I managed to squeeze in 3 miles after volleyball, so I caught up a bit. I also scratched working out on Friday. I did my Saturday AM run and plan to go to BodyPump today. So my ACTUAL workouts look like this:

Honestly, not too happy with this, but I did have to make some adjustments due to unforeseen circumstances. I plan to work really hard in week 2, and FORCE MYSELF to do some freaking strength training. I have several Groupons/Living Social deals to fitness-related places, so I am going to see what strength classes work with my schedule.

My plan for this week is to run in the early AM on Thursday. Time to start that transition into a morning runner. Major UGG. But hopefully it will make the Saturday long runs a lot more tolerable.

Dash and WINE

Ok so it’s really Wine and Dash, but we did dash before we wined.

Tonight I did something BOLD and joined a running group. I randomly got an email from a work contact about this meet-up and it sounded right up my alley. I present to you…WINE AND DASH, the best new thing in running.

The gist is this. Runners meet up at a local restaurant, Cafe Cattura, and are given the option of running 1, 2 or 4 miles. All paces and abilities are welcome. You go out, run, sweat and enjoy the company of other runners and then you go back to the restaurant and are welcomed with icy towels, delicious cheeses, the coolest t-shirt ever (how badass is that logo?!), and WINE. Forget water after a run in the 95 degree humidity (although they had that too). Wine is the answer.

I really enjoyed the run and meeting folks who were also interested in hitting the pavement in August. We all agreed that the treadmill was getting a little old and we just couldn’t muster up the courage to run outside alone (the heat can really mess with one’s motivation). I think we all suffered a little bit, but running towards a carrot in the shape of a big ‘ole glass of Sauvingnon Blanc really makes the discomfort a lot more tolerable.

Looking forward to next week’s run…I hear Pinot Grigio calling my name!

Garminless

Somehow in the midst of my recent travels I seem to have misplaced my Garmin charger. Truth is, it’s been a nice excuse NOT to run. I am freakish about running without it – I just can’t get out the door. It’s like my security blanket. Unfortunately it also means that I haven’t really been running at all. I took a hardcore spin class last week and have been doing BodyPump 2-3 times a week as well. As for running…nada.

So tonight I FORCED myself out the door with my little dinky wristwatch. I decided to run for about 15 minutes and turn around in the hopes that I’d do about 3 miles. I ended up running almost exactly 3 miles in 27:34 which is about a 9:11 pace. It was balls hot outside so I really shouldn’t have gone that fast. See, I NEED my Garmin!

Garmin you are my bff. You make me smile.

I’m starting half marathon training on August 6th so I really need to build up a base. This time around I plan on doing some REAL cross training, so hopefully a little running base and some weight lifting will take me to a new PR!!! Do I smell a sub 2 hour half in my future?!?!?

The best part about my next half marathon? I leave for my HONEYMOON two days later!

Gym, Tan, Wedding?

Now that the half marathon has passed, I’ve decided to try and focus on building a little bit of strength, getting a little tan and planning a litle wedding.

It’s hot as BALLS in Virginia right now and running isn’t exactly fun. I’ve done a handful of easy 3 milers since the race and one of them almost put me over the edge. It was so blazing hot out that I seriously considered drinking from a puddle. It’s been in the high 90s most of the week and has been in the mid 80s even early in the morning. Boo.

So rather than run till I pass out, I’ve decided to try my hand at BODYPUMP.

When it comes to weight lifting, I have no idea what I’m doing. I don’t really know how to use the machines and I don’t know what to do with free weights. I mostly lift things like my cats and beer glasses.

5 liters of beer is heavy.

On my first day of BodyPump I didn’t really know what to expect. For some reason I thought there would be more cardio involved, but it was literally just weight lifting. And man did it kick my ass. I could barely lift my fork at dinner that night and I was incredibly sore the next day. Obviously I’ll be going back since it’s clear my muscles need a little torture every now and then.

I specifically want to focus on my back, since that’s what people will be staring at while I’m at the alter for our wedding. I want to be toned and tan (what bride doesn’t?!). I’m hoping a combination of BodyPump, Bootcamp and yoga will do the trick.

As for tanning, I tried to get a jump start on that this past weekend. I spent the day with my posse down by the James River. It was a beautiful day and I did manage to get a little sun.

I managed to burn my feet pretty badly, but at least it’s sort of evening out the annoying running shoe tan I had going on down there.

We’re officially less than 5 months from the big day and I am pretty sure I still have a TON to do. I’m not stressed though…everything will come together. The big stuff is done, so now it’s just those annoying details that need to be taken care of. Yawn. I have ZERO interest in choosing napkins, tie colors, and a limo service…I totally get why people hire wedding planners!

Time to go for a run…
